Sales Director

Job Introduction

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Sales Director (SD) will role model leadership, providing direction and support to the sales function to create the engagement, capability, and focus, to deliver agreed revenue and margin budgets, functional improvements, and strategic objectives. Creating and delivering a sales plan that will improve employee engagement, capability, productivity, processes, cross functional collaboration, and outcome focus to support our growth aspirations through strategic account and demand management. A key member of the TPA Management Team, with shared responsibility for the ongoing success of the business.


Key Responsibilities

  • As part of the management team, the SD needs to be a visible leader within the whole organisation, supporting our people goals and embodying our Vp behaviours.
  • Recruit, retain and develop talent and business capabilities, ensuring that all reports have key objectives in place and are being supported, coached, and led towards successful achievement. Working with HR Business Partner to embed performance and talent management within the function.
  • Inspire and engage a high performing sales team through positive 2-way communication, performance management, time in field, a team meeting cycle with purpose and outcomes.
  • Ensure sales colleagues have the required level of training and ongoing development, to achieve our budget / agreed forecast and customer management proposition.
  • As a key member of the management team the SD plays an important role in defining and delivering against our longer-term strategic goals, leading key pillars and initiative as appropriate.
  • Develop and execute the annual sales plan define the team focus, customer management approach, number of accounts per colleagues, number of visits per customer, opportunity conversion, training plans, etc ensuring the appropriate targets (financial & non-financial) and management reviews are in place.
  • Achievement of agreed budgeted volume, revenue, margin, profit levels, through the delivery of the annual budget and 3 Year Plan. 
  • Robust revenue forecasting, with clear assumptions, and transparent managed opportunities and vulnerabilities, proactively addressing gaps, aligning relevant stakeholders, and agreeing outcomes and actions. 
  • Long term demand pipeline management in key sector and with priority accounts aligned to strategy, guided by SD leadership of our Route to Market & segmentation (bi-annual) review.
  • Identify key opportunities / vulnerabilities developing plans to maximise opportunities, such as sales plan, key tenders, rate changes, etc and stakeholder the MT / LT for approval.
  • Prioritise time with key customers, sharing our TPA proposition, and connecting TPA stakeholder deeper into their organisations. 
  • Responsible for cash collection and the delivery of our DSO & overdue targets.
  • Responsible via the TPA Commercial Manager for Hire Desk, ensuring an efficient customer focused department, processing accurately and in a timely fashion, and supporting sales activities, planning and project management.
  • Working alongside the Operations Director to exceed customer requirements, through adherence to service level agreements. Ensuring sales & operational relationships are in place at a national, and regional level. 
  • Working alongside the Operations Manager (Supply Chain & Logistics) to execute the forecast demand plan, collaborating creatively to realise opportunities / overcome barriers to maximise capacity & margin.
  • Work with the Head of Technical to ensure we are incorporating customer trends and insight into our product, service, and delivery methods. 
  • Working with the Head of Finance, ensuring effective control over rate, transport, and long terms agreements, team costs, and commission / bonus schemes.
  • Work with the Marketing team, to define and deliver the brand plans and short-term activity plans. 
  • Where appropriate, proposing to the Board potential acquisitions opportunities, including justification and fit to business.

  • A strategic thinker, able to deliver short term / medium targets, whilst leading us to our long-term goals. 
  • A collaborative proactive leader, with a win win mindset, who instigates initiatives / focus to maximise revenue/profit with division and group.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership capabilities: engaging, encouraging, collaborative and able to inspire team to execute the Company strategy and business objectives / KPIs. 
  • Strong and capable contributor to the divisional business management team.
  • At least five years’ experience in a sales / commercial senior management position within a business with experience of multi-site, customer focused environment with national and regional field teams.
  • Evidence of enabling continuous revenue and profit growth, with a full understanding of P&L and asset management. 
  • Outstanding relationship building with influencing skills both internally and externally. A team player, highly motivated with a strong commercial acumen and an outgoing personality.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills; a self-starter with the ability to work independently using their own initiative.
  • Clear and concise communicator, with proven analytical and numerical evaluation skills to effectively review and respond to data and trends. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, with the ability to produce engaging communications.
  • Understands and is an advocate of the importance of Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality compliance.
  • Have a full UK driving licence.

Although not a must have: 

  • Ideally educated to degree level.
  • Knowledge of the construction industry preferred but not essential.
